Puerto Williams is currently the most southern town in Chile and the world! It is located on the northern shore of Isla Navarino, along the Beagle Channel, and has a population of around 2,500 inhabitants. This small town can be found 300 km from Punta Arenas. It was named in honor of Juan Williams the founder of Fort Bulnes.
Puerto Williams is located in Region XII, it is the same region as Cape Horn and Chilean Antarctica. During earlier centuries the area was inhabited by primitive races that are traced back to be as old as the American Continent. These indigenous races were called the Yaganes and Yamanas. The Yamanas navigated their fragile wooden boats in the channels near Puerto Williams until the first British explorers arrived.
