The W has become one of the most popular treks in the world. It is traditionally done in the summer, when you can see flowers and feel the warm sun. But, for those of you who enjoy white covered mountains, this is a unique and incredible time to visit the W of Torres del Paine.
It is a trek that takes you through the different main attractions of Torres del Paine National Park.
You have the opportunity to see granite
formations that impose on the sedimentary rocks, ancient glaciers
in the Valleys and the majestic Grey Glacier, and the diverse Flora and Fauna that astonish us at every hilltop.
We will paddle to the amazing Tyndall River, where between icebergs we will find a hidden glacier in a unique environment.
Your guide will be waiting to pick you up in the airport and will take you to Puerto Natales by bus (approximately a 3 hour drive) from El Calafate (approximately 5 hour drive).
We will leave Puerto Natales heading towards Torres del Paine National Park. After we arrive in the park we will casually walk up a mountain that provides us with an incredible view of Lake Nordenskjold and the Asencio Valley. We will spend the night in Torres.
Early in the morning we will leave our tents. We will hike 1 hour to admire the sunrise on the Torres; after a rest we will continue on 5 hours towards Camp Cuernos located at the waves of Lake Nordenskjold and the foot of the impressive Cuernos of Paine.
Shortly after breakfast we will start our hike towards Camp Italian. After two hours of walking we will leave our backpack at the camp and continue on to the French Valley lookout where we can enjoy an amazing view of Lake Nordenskjold, Skottberg and Pehoe behind us and the shocking French Glacier just ahead. After leaving the lookout we will return to gather our backpacks and continue to Camp Paine Grande.
After breakfast we will leave on a footpath that will take us through strong winds to an unforgettable view of one of the arms of the Southern Ice Field called Glacier Grey. The walk is a short 4 hours leaving most of the day to relax
After five days trekking on one of the most famous paths through Patagonia, the “W” takes us to the embarkation of Grey II that will pass us in front of the Glacier Grey. After two hours on the boat, we will arrive at Grey Hotel to take a transfer to Rio Serrano.
We will board our kayaks and row until we reach a beautiful waterfall, where we will get out and take a short walk (about 200 meters) carrying our kayaks, avoiding the waterfall. Shortly after this we will stop to camp.
Today we will move our kayaks, rest, and prepare for the following day. We start out carrying our kayaks towards Rio Tyndall, this part of the river is upstream and it is very complicated to paddle up. Afterwards we will set up our camp and rest a bit with an incredible view of Lake Tyndall.
Today, we paddle our way into the lake between different ice burgs until arriving at the Glacier Tyndall, where we can see more or less where it has receded. Luckily, the currents are with us when we return to Rio Serrano and along the way we will look for a place to set up camp.
In the morning we will continue our trip on Rio Serrano until we arrive at Puerto Toro. Here we will leave our kayaks and walk 35 minutes to see Glacier Serrano at the foot of Mount Balmaceda in Bernardo O'Higgins National Park. Upon returning to our kayaks, we will load them onto a boat (21 de Mayo) that will take us to Puerto Natales. Before arriving we will stop at a typical Chilean farmhouse for lunch. After this we will continue by motor boat to Puerto Natales.
We will take a transfer today to return to Punta Arenas or El Calafate.
